FAQs

What if my child finds it difficult to concentrate or refuses to talk during the session?

Don’t worry, as SLTs we are used to this. I will take time to build a rapport with your child so that they feel comfortable, and I will follow their lead. Every child is different so I will plan and adapt each session to the needs of your child. That means observing, assessing and treating through free play, playing turn-taking games and choosing activities which are motivating and fun.

How should I prepare my child before we see you?

This will largely depend on your child’s age and level of understanding but try to be open and honest. For younger children keep it simple and say something like “Susie’s going to come and play with us. She’s going to help us with your talking/learning words/sounds”. You may want to show them my picture (on this site) before we meet. Try to avoid saying anything which may feel like pressure e.g. “Make sure you talk nice and loud” or “Don’t be shy” as this usually has the opposite effect!

What happens if my child is ill or my child cannot attend?

I ask for 24 hours notice if you can no longer attend a session, otherwise you may still be charged. Of course if your child is unwell and you have to cancel at the last minute I quite understand. In the event that I need to cancel a session, I will let you know with as much notice as possible (ideally 24 hours) and I will rearrange the session with you to a mutually convenient time.
